Friday, 7 January 2005

Seoul (Fides Service ) - The Catholic Church in Korea is multiplying efforts to help the victims of the December 26 tsunami. Archbishop Andreas Choi Chnag-mou of Kwangju president of the Korean Bishops Conference told Fides that Catholic communities all over the country are collecting funds at the local and national level to send to Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand and India.
While priests and religious continue their commitment and work of sensitisation through Caritas Korea in particular, the many Catholic lay movements in Korea have mobilised their members to make the needs of the victims known in every sector of society with solidarity campaigns in schools, office, shops and on the streets. People are asked to give money or material aid or professional assistance in the present and for the future with regard to rebuilding. In the meantime a team of volunteers, members of the One Body Movement, is preparing to go to Sri Lanka to give a hand in emergency healthcare in the archdiocese of Colombo.
Offerings from dioceses all over Korea continue to arrive at the central offices of the Bishops’ Conference in Seoul. Archbishop Choi Chang-mou addressed a letter of sympathy on behalf of the Church in Korea to the Church in Thailand, Sri Lanka, India and Indonesia, assuring the respective Bishops’ Conferences support of prayer and concrete charity to assist the homeless survivors.
