AFRICA - Regional Conference of "Caritas Africa": the challenges to face

Rome (Agenzia Fides) - "The love of Christ urges us: together in the service to the poor". This was the theme of the 8th Regional Conference of "Caritas Africa" which was held in Rome from May 10 to 12, before the 20th General Assembly of Caritas Internationalis, inaugurated by Pope Francis with a Mass yesterday afternoon, May 12, in St. Peter's.
According to information sent to Agenzia Fides, the meeting of Caritas Africa was attended by 100 delegates from various African Countries. In his opening speech, the President of Caritas Africa, His Exc. Mgr. Francisco João Silota, Bishop of Chimoio (Mozambique), underlined the challenges that Caritas Africa have to face: refugees, killing of Christians, xenophobia, ebola, hunger.
Caritas network in Africa operates in 46 Countries in 17,000 parishes. According to data presented by Jacques Dinan, Executive Director of Caritas Africa, the area of greatest intervention regards food security, agriculture and nutrition, followed by health (with particular regard to HIV/AIDS), rural development and women.
At the end of the Conference, the Regional Commission of Caritas Africa was named, formed by representatives from Ghana, Uganda, Congo Brazzaville, Madagascar and Lesotho. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 13/05/2015)
