ASIA/MACAU - A new musical piece dedicated to Fr. Matteo Ricci

Wednesday, 22 April 2015

Macao (Agenzia Fides) - On Sunday, April 26, the "Missa in honorem Matthaei Ricci", will be performed in the church of St. Joseph's Seminary in Macao, where in the last two centuries many missionaries have studied. His Mass "for assembly, female choir, brass and organ" includes four choirs from different schools in Macao.
According to information sent to Agenzia Fides, the Mass in honour of Matteo Ricci (Macerata 1552, Beijing 1610) where he lived for a time, before going to the Chinese mainland, is the work of Aurelio Porfiri, an Italian composer who has lived in Macau for several years. With the advice of the Jesuit liturgist Father Cesare Giraudo, texts were chosen that best describe the special missionary vocation of Matteo Ricci or Lì Mǎdòu, as he is called by the Chinese. Although one cannot speak of "liturgy", this Mass, in Latin, will be presented during a concert . (SL) (Agenzia Fides 22/04/2015)
