AMERICA/EL SALVADOR - "Young people want to know more about Romero"

San Salvador (Agenzia Fides) - Today El Salvador lives a special day: across the country commemorative celebrations for the 35th anniversary of the assassination of the Archbishop of San Salvador, Mgr. Oscar Arnulfo Romero, who was killed on 24 March 1980 and will be beatified on May 23 (see Fides 12/03/2015) have been organized.
Among the numerous reports sent to Fides by the local Pontifical Mission Societies, one concerns the university students of El Salvador. Students and professors of the Multidisciplinary Faculty of the University of El Salvador (UES), have organized a commemorating event. According to the note sent to Fides, Lisandro Romero, coordinator of the Frente Revolucionario Estudiantil stressed that the event aims to reflect on the life and death of the Archbishop. "For students, it is a moment to deepen the teaching of Mgr. Romero as a social message in defense of human rights", said Lisandro Romero. On behalf of professors, Miguel A. Ortiz said: "young people want to know the history of our martyr, who is now known throughout the world".
It is expected that at least 500 students will participate in the initiative. A delegation will attend the Mass to be celebrated in the Cathedral by the Archbishop of San Salvador, His Exc. Mgr. José Luis Escobar Alas, successor of Mgr. Romero. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 24/03/2015)
