AMERICA/EL SALVADOR - The National Security Council begins

San Salvador (Agenzia Fides) – The "Consejo Nacional de Seguridad Ciudadana y Coexistence" was officially established on October 31, with 70 members, and the work program was decided. There will be meetings every week at the Presidential House and a report will have to be submitted by the end of December. It was established by the President of the Republic, Salvador Sánchez Cerén on 29 September and during its first session (October 8) brought together 30 members who worked to put together the entire national representation and the preparation of 7 tables of technical work.
Therefore on 1 November, according to the note sent to Agenzia Fides from a local source, the Council was completed. It is made up of members of government, ministers (education and government), Chief of Police, Association of Private Entrepreneurs, representatives of Churches (Catholic, Anglican, Protestant), the Attorney General, Attorney for Human Rights, the Supreme Court of Justice, the national media intellectuals and international bodies such as the United Nations program for Development (UNDP), the Organization of American States (OAS) and the European Union.
The seven working groups relate to many areas: prevention of violence and crime; control and prosecution of criminal offenses; rehabilitation and social reintegration; assistance to victims; institutional strengthening of Public Security; coordination mechanisms; the mass media.
The Catholic Church, which has always supported this initiative (see Fides 07/10/2014), is represented by the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of San Salvador, His Exc. Mgr. Gregorio Rosa Chávez, and by the spokesman for the archdiocese, father Jesús Delgado. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 03/11/2014)
