EUROPE/IRELAND - Appointment of National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - On May 9, 2014 Cardinal Fernando Filoni, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, appointed Fr. Maurice Hogan, of the Society of Saint Columban for Foreign Missions (SSC) as National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) in Ireland for three years (2014-2017).
The new National Director is 74 years old and was ordained a priest in 1966. Immediately after his ordination he was sent to Japan, where he studied the language and obtained a master's degree in theology at Sophia University in Tokyo. He continued his studies at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome, and obtained a licentiate in Sacred Scripture. In 1975 he returned to Japan, where he was assistant pastor and parish priest until 1983. From 1989 to 1992 he obtained his doctorate in Sacred Scripture in Dublin. He was assistant pastor in the United States and Hong Kong, he taught Sacred Scripture in different colleges and universities in Hong Kong and Ireland. He is currently a visiting professor at the Regional Seminary in Suva (Fiji). (SL) (Agenzia Fides 14/10/2014)
