Vatican City (Fides Service) - In response to a call by Pope John Paul II to make a list of associations of lay Catholics in the world which receive official approval of the Holy See, the Pontifical Council for the Laity has published the Italian version of a Register of International Associations of Lay Catholics “Repertorio delle Associazioni internazionali dei fedeli”. The volume offers a complete picture of all the different types of Catholic associations. This is the first time that the Pontifical Council for the Laity presents a comprehensive list of present day Catholic lay activities ranging from traditional to the newest church movements and communities.
The 300 page book lists 123 associations which bring together millions of Catholics all over the world in many different fields: culture, education or social services The book offers a chart on each association: official name, year of foundation, development, identity, structure, diffusion, works, publications, internet sites, addresses of central offices, logo. The list given does not include lay associations which, although in contact with the Pontifical Council for the Laity, report to other bodies in the Roman Curia and those which operate only in the diocesan or national area. The Register, which will be updated periodically, is available in Italian, English, French and Spanish editions will soon be ready. (S.L.) (Agenzia Fides 1/12/2004 - Righe 19; Parole 222)
