AFRICA/SENEGAL - Appointment of the Bishop of Thiès

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - The Holy Father Benedict XVI on January 18, 2013, appointed Rev. André Gueye, of the clergy of Thies, Professor of philosophy at the Major Seminary St. Jean Marie Vianney Brin (diocese of Ziguinchor) as Bishop of the diocese of Thies (Senegal).
Rev. André Gueye was born on January 6, 1967 in Pallo-Youga in the city of Thies. He studied philosophy first at the Major Seminary in Sebikhotane (Dakar) and then in Brin (Ziguinchor). He did a-three-year theological studies in Rome, hosted at the Pontifical Urban College, and student at the Urbaniana University. He was ordained a priest on June 27, 1992 in the Cathedral of Thies. After ordination he held the following positions: 1992-1997: Assistant priest of St. Croix, in Bambey; 1997-2000: Assistant priest of the Cathedral Sainte Anne Thiès; 2000-2004: Sunday Vicar of the Cathedral Sainte Anne Thiès; 2004-2006: Pastor of the parish Sainte Croix in Bambey; 2006-2012: Teacher of Philosophy at the Major Seminary of St. Jean Marie Vianney in Brin (diocese of Ziguinchor).
