AMERICA/HAITI - UN Report: 400,000 earthquake victims still in tents
Port au Prince (Agenzia Fides) - Nearly 400,000 earthquake victims in Haiti in January 2010 are still living in tents, which have increasingly deteriorated due to lack of resources: the alarm is from a recent United Nations report presented yesterday at the Security Council. These people live in poor health conditions and are vulnerable to natural hazards, with acute diarrhea and cholera, according to the Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon. The report states that 30 percent of the 10 million cubic meters of debris derived from the earthquake still have to be removed. With regards to the epidemic of cholera which broke out in October 2010, the report states 7440 deaths and 581,000 infected. The report also recognizes that the 5.5 billion dollars in aid pledged at the conference in March 2010 held at the United Nations, just under half (2570000000) was received. Of the 5.78 billion dollars from bilateral and multilateral donors for humanitarian activities in the period 2010-2012, only 10 percent (556 million euro) was submitted to the government. The Secretary-General’s report also proposes the withdrawal of the military and police of Minustah (United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 04/10/2012)
