ASIA/SOUTH KOREA - Archbishop of Seoul’s resignation and appointment of Successor

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - The Holy Father Benedict XVI on May 10, 2012 accepted the resignation from the pastoral governance of the Archdiocese of Seoul in Korea, by Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jinsuk, in accordance with canon. 401 § 1 of the Code of Canon Law. The Holy Father appointed Andrew Bishop Yeom Soo jung, until now titular Bishop of Tibiuca, Auxiliary and Vicar General of the same archdiocese as Archbishop of Seoul (Korea).
His Exc. Mgr. Andrew Yeom Soo jung was born on December 5, 1943 in Ansong, Diocese of Suwon, in a Catholic family for 5 generations. He studied in his country. He was ordained a priest on December 8, 1970 in Seoul. After ordination, he held the following positions: Vice-rector in two separate locations (1971-1973); Professor and Dean of Songshin High School (Minor Seminary) (1973-1977); Pastor in three different locations (1977-1987 ); Attorney of the Major Seminary in Seoul (1987-1992); Chancellor of the archdiocesan Curia (1992-1998); Pastor in Mok-dong and Foraneo Vicar (1998-2001); member of the council of Priests. On 12 December 2001 he was elected titular Bishop of Tibiuca and Auxiliary of the Archdiocese of Seoul. He received his Episcopal ordination on January 25, 2002. (SL) (Agenzia Fides 10/5/2012)
