AFRICA/SWAZILAND - "Food for Peace": a hot meal at school for needy children

Monday, 16 April 2012

Manzini (Agenzia Fides) - Many children in Swaziland are in a precarious situation, they have difficulty following their studies and live in families with serious problems such as HIV/AIDS, unemployment and poverty. Thanks to a donation of more than 75 tons of food, made by the Agency for International Development of the United States (USAID), which is part of its program "Food for Peace", over 20 000 children in 45 schools in four regions of the country receive a hot meal in schools and assistant centers, from March to December 2012. The initiative sees the collaboration of USAID, the Attorney Salesian Missions of New Rochelle and the Salesians of Swaziland. A note sent to Fides byAns says that the Salesian Missions and the Manzini Youth Care institution of local Salesians are working with some of the most disadvantaged groups, including children, the elderly and disabled people, offering them homes for former street children, orphaned or in vulnerable situations. Even the food situation of many children is particularly difficult. However food will be distributed not only in favor of school children, but also for the disadvantaged elderly and for some charity organizations. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 16/4/2012)
