EUROPE/ENGLAND-Millions of people at risk of hunger due to high food prices

Friday, 3 June 2011

London (Agenzia Fides) - A report by British NGO Oxfam, by 2030, food will double its price. Corn could increase by 180% and in the world there will always be more riots and "wars of bread. " The warning from Oxfam, which analyzes the volatility of prices of foodstuffs in recent months, shows that the overall price of cereals has increased by 71%, reaching a new record in April. The research requires that the prices of basic foods could throw millions into poverty in developing countries, where cost on food affects 80% of income. "Despite the economic boom of the past two decades - says the document - in India there are 65 million more hungry people, while the U.S. continues to use 15% of corn produced in the world to obtain biofuels. " different factors influence the price , from the race to produce biofuels which takes away land for food production, to impoverishment of natural resources due to over-exploitation, to climate change, to the supremacy of the few companies in the food market. Already last month, the World Bank warned that rising food prices has pushed 44 million people in poverty in recent months. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 03/06/2011)
