Tuesday, 21 December 2010

Kathmandu (Agenzia Fides) - Sixty years after opening the first school in Nepal, the Jesuits continue to expand the educational apostolate in the Country. In fact another floor, the fourth, has just been added at St Xavier's School, the school that the Society of Jesus runs in Kathmandu. According to information sent to Fides by the General Curia, on 3 December, the Feast of St Francis Xavier, during the ceremony blessing the new premises, the Apostolic Vicar of Nepal, Bishop Anthony Sharma, himself a Jesuit , said: “The red color of my scarf records the sacrifices of so many supporters, parents, teachers, students and Jesuits who have made it possible to realize more fully the school's motto: 'Living for God, working for Nepal'.” The building is one of the largest of its kind in the nation. Created as a private school for boys, ten years ago it began to accept girls. In 1999 the Jesuits opened another two new schools in eastern Nepal, 10 kilometers from the border with India, attended by children of poorer families. Further expansion of the teaching apostolate is also expected in the region of Pokhara city, west of Kathmandu, where the Jesuits have recently purchased several acres of land.
