ASIA/MYANMAR - Erection of the Diocese of Kalay and first Bishop appointed

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) – Pope Benedict XVI, on May 22, 2010, erected the Diocese of Kalay (Myanmar), with territory taken from the Diocese of Hakha, making it a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Mandalay. The Holy Father has appointed as first Bishop of Kalay (Myanmar) His Excellency Felix Lian Khen Thang, Titular Bishop of Fessei and Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Hakha. The new diocese of Kalay (nom.lat. Kalayen/sis/), bordered to the east by the Diocese of Myitkyina and to the south by the Archdiocese of Mandalay and the Diocese of Hakha. It is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Mandalay. The parish church of St. Mary's Parish in Kalaymyo will become the Cathedral of the newly erected diocese. (SL) (Agenzia Fides 05/22/2010)
