AFRICA/MOZAMBIQUE - National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies appointed

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) – Cardinal Ivan Dias, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, on October 23, 2009 appointed Fr. Athanasius Amisse Canira, of the diocesan clergy of Nacala, National Director of Pontifical Mission in Mozambique for five years (2009-2014).
The new National Director was born May 2, 1962 at Mossoril (Diocese of Nacala, Mozambique) and was ordained priest on December 12, 1993 at the Mission of Carapira. After his primary and secondary, he attended the propedeutic seminary of Mater Apostolorum in Nampula (1986), then studied philosophy at the Philosophical Seminar of Saint Augustine of Matola (1989) and theology at the Theological Seminary of St. Pius X in Maputo (1993). He received his Bachelor's Degree in Theology at the Pontifical Urban University in Rome and a Licentiate in Moral Theology at the Alphonsian Academy in Rome (1998). Among the different positions he held after his priestly ordination are: parish pastor in different communities, Coordinator of the Diocesan Commission of Youth, team member of the Comboni Missionaries in Namapa, Spiritual Director of the Seminary of St. Pius X and a member of the team of formators. Since February 2007, Parish Pastor at the Parish of Nossa Senhora da Purificacao da Ilha de Macambique, Coordinator of the Diocesan Commission on the Family and Director of the at-a-distance Theology Course.
