Hong Kong (Agenzia Fides) – During her recent pastoral trip to Hong Kong, which took place September 16-21, Sister Mary Prema, new Superior General of the Missionaries of Charity founded by Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta, confirmed the desire and strong will of the Sisters to carry out their service “to the poorest of the poor,” in accordance with the will of their foundress. During her first visit to the community in the Far East, after having been elected in the Chapter held last March, Sr. Prema was able to observe up close the work of her Sisters in Hong Kong, also paying a visit to Bishop John Tong of Hong Kong.
According to a report from the Kong Ko Bao (the Chinese version of the diocesan bulletin), upon the invitation of the new Superior General, Bishop Tong presided Mass in the “Charity House” for all the missionaries, volunteers, and friends of Mother Teresa. After the Mass, Sr. Prema spoke to the Bishop of the work carried out by the Missionaries of Charity, reaffirming their wishes to carry out the lifelong desire of Mother Teresa: offer services on the mainland. Bishop Tong was pleased with this commitment and recalled with great affection when he accompanied Mother Teresa's Sisters on the mainland. From then on he had perceived the strong desire of Mother Teresa to provide services to those most in need on the mainland.
Sr. Mary Prema continues on her visit to the Far East, visiting Macao, Cambodia, Thailand, and Singapore, where there are Sisters of Mother Teresa present. The Missionaries of Charity, founded by Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta in 1950, in India, arrived in Hong Kong in 1983. They mainly care for the sick and homeless and all those abandoned by society. They recently began caring for children, offering education and integral formation. Every day they offer 30-90 hot meals to the poor and homeless. (NZ) (Agenzia Fides 29/09/2009)
