Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) – The Holy Father Benedict XVI, on June 19, 2009, accepted the renunciation of the pastoral government of the Apostolic Vicariate of Iles Saint-Pierre et Miquelon (Département d’Outre-Mer/France) presented by Bishop Lucien Fischer C.S.Sp., in conformity with the Code of Canon Law, canon 401 § 1. The Holy Father appointed Fr. Pierre-Marie Gaschy C.S.Sp., superior of the community of Fameck in the diocese of Metz, France, as apostolic vicar of Iles Saint-Pierre et Miquelon, assigning him the titular see of Usinaza.
Fr. Pierre-Marie Gaschy C.S.Sp was born in France on June 26, 1941. He completed his philosophy and theology studies at the academy of the Holy Ghost Fathers of Chevilly-Larue (1961-69). He took perpetual vows on December 14, 1968 and was ordained a priest on July 6, 1969. He has since ministered as follows: 1969-1987: Pastoral Ministry in the Central African Republic and, from 1981, as well as Vicar General of the Diocese of Bambari; 1987-1993: Superior of the eastern region and member of the Provincial Council of Strasbourg (France); 1993-1997: Pastoral Ministry in Central African Republic, in Bambari and head of the vocations “Foyer”; 1997-2008: superior of the various Holy Ghost Fathers in France; since 2008: superior of the community of Fameck in the diocese of Metz, France.
The Apostolic Vicariate of Illes Saint Pierre et Miquelon (1970), covers a surface of 245,000 km sq. It has 6,125 inhabitants, 6,076 Catholics. The Vicariate is entrusted to the spiritual care of the Holy Ghost Fathers. The Vicariate has 2 parishes and 2 religious priests and 7 religious sisters. (S.L.) (Agenzia Fides 19/6/2009)
