AMERICA/ARGENTINA - National Encounter for Pastoral Care of Tourists, on “the role of tourism in relation to human rights”

Wednesday, 3 June 2009

Cordoba (Agenzia Fides) – The city of Villa Carlos Paz (Cordoba) will be hosting the National Encounter for Pastoral Care of Tourists on June 10,11, and 12. The event is being sponsored by the Argentinean Bishops' Commission for Migration and Tourism. The Encounter will be attended by Bishop Ruben O. Frassia, President of the Commission, government employees, diocesan delegates, and those who work in tourism and travel agencies, universities, etc.
In 2008, there was a National Meeting of Delegates of Pastoral Care of Tourists, in the city of Buenos Aires. Seeing the need and the positive outcome of the Meeting, this year the proposal was made to have another Encounter for Pastoral Care of Tourists, but not only restricted to Pastoral Delegates. “We felt the need for the participation of those who work in this sector, and thus, we extended the invitation to agents working in the public sector, in education, and to the general public that was interested,” organizers say.
Observing the deep impact that tourism has, the Pastoral Care of Tourists' Office in Argentina hopes to present “the role of tourism in relation to human rights.” They say that the current process taking place in the world of tourism, beginning with the incorporation of ethical concepts in its development, “allowed a relationship to be established between tourist activity and human rights. We consider the phenomenon of tourism as a means of obtaining several of those acknowledged in the Declaration of Human Rights.”
In addition, “aware of the fact that our nation is suffering from a loss of these values, as those working in the pastoral care of tourists, we hope to reflect on some of these themes, to open room for responses rooted in Gospel values.”
During the Encounter, the following themes will be addressed: The World Ethic Code for Tourism, According to the Perspective of the Church's Social Doctrine; Tourism's Role in Diminishing Poverty; The Person and Nature; Sexual and Commercial Exploitation in Tourism. (RG) (Agenzia Fides 3/6/2009)
