Rome (Fides Service) - On June 14 the first Blood Donors Day will be launched in the South African city of Johannesburg, with a campaign, “Blood, a gift of Life”.
The organisers say the Day is to thank blood donors for the priceless gift offered to community and country and to encourage new generations to become regular blood donors.
An adequate provision of safe blood is crucial for a good health system and it is an important means of preventing infective diseases.
There are still many countries where not enough blood is made available to hospitals and health centres. In some countries there is the problem of infected blood which can transmit HIV hepatitis, syphilis and malaria.
South Africa was chosen to host the launching of the campaign because of its efficient national blood donor service. In fact here, donors provide all the blood needed. (AP) (21/5/2004 Agenzia Fides; Righe:20; Parole:216)
