ASIA/TAIWAN - Bishop of Kaohsiung launches campaign: “My Daily Bread,” to help the needy and unemployed affected by the economic crisis

Tuesday, 31 March 2009

Taipei (Agenzia Fides) – The plague of the economic crisis has struck the entire world, affecting many families, but it has also served as a wake-up call to many Christians, intensifying their adhesion to the faith and the Church. With this in mind, Bishop Peter Liu Cheng-chung of Kaohsiung wrote a Letter to the faithful of the Diocese, entitled: “Spread love among citizens, donate rice and help the unemployed,” dated March 11.
In the Letter, the Bishop calls for concrete aid for the unemployed. In fact, he writes: “Dearest brothers and sisters, in this time of Lent, in addition to intensifying our prayer...we should apply the law of love and service...as Jesus told us: 'whatsoever you do to these, the least of my brothers, that you do unto me.' (Mt 25:40). And the favored disciple of Jesus, John, affirms: 'Children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth.' (1Jn 3:18). We should transmit the message of hope, convinced that 'while there is life, there is hope.'” Thus, he invites his Diocese to take part in the campaign “My Daily Bread.” Bishop Liu writes: “We should open our ears to listen to the voice of the needy around us; we should open our hearts to better see these needy; we should move our feet and hands to carry out our service. The most important is to always have a compassionate heart that is filled with merciful love for the needy, helping them to emerge from the dark valley of life and journey towards the light of the sun.” So that in the end, “we can all proclaim together: 'Dying you destroyed our death, rising you restored our life; Lord Jesus, come in glory!'.”
The campaign “My Daily Bread” offers rice to the needy and unemployed, to help them overcome the present crisis. It also hopes to spread awareness in society of the need to help the unemployed experience the warmth of human and Christian love. The Diocese has opened a telephone hotline number and a bank account to facilitate participation in the campaign. (NZ) (Agenzia Fides 31/3/2009)
