Monday, 23 March 2009

Taipei (Agenzia Fides) – 18 former drug-addicts from the Sindian Drug Abuser Treatment Center were baptized on March 9. They are considered spiritual fruits of the 4th Evangelization Course that was organized by the Catholic Prison Ministry Association of the Archdiocese of Taipei. According to the group's leader, it is a new initiative that has already experienced great success. Since the Sindian Drug Abuser Treatment Center opened two years ago, the Catholic Prison Ministry Associations has taken steps in performing a thorough apostolate at the Center and there has been rapid growth. In fact, there were only about 100 patients when the Center opened and now it has over 800. Local Catholics have embraced this tragic reality of drug addiction as a challenge for evangelization efforts in today's world. The Association also organizes Evangelization Courses. After the 2nd Course, there were 7 baptisms, after the 3rd, 11. And now, after the 4th, there have been 18. There are now 30 Catholics working in this delicate ministry in the Lord's vineyard.
