ASIA/TAIWAN - Spring Assembly of the Chinese Regional Bishops’ Conference re-elects members of commissions and outlines commitment for evangelisation

ChaiYi (Fides Service) - During their Spring assembly held 12 to 16 April in ChaiYi the members of the Chinese Regional Bishops’ Conference discussed new initiatives for evangelisation and the work of their different Commissions for which new presidents were elected. The Conference also greeted two Bishops who are due to retire having reached the age limit Archbishop Joseph Ti-Kang of Taipei, and Bishop Andrei Tsien Tchew-choenn of Hua Lien.
The participants confirmed for a new term of office the members of the standing committee and assigned new presidents to four of the Conference’s Commissions: Social Communications, Sacred Scripture, Laity and Family. They also decided to reactivate the Commission for Justice and Peace and the Commission for Social Development.
With regard to special initiatives the Bishops discussed details of a new Campaign, “Building Communities of Faith, Hope and Charity” to promote in parishes. Preparations are also underway for a Diocesan Eucharistic Congress. Priorities identified in pastoral work included vocation pastoral formation of future priests, and pastoral care for students. The Church in Taiwan also intends to intensify pastoral work and evangelisation in Catholics schools, parishes and provide on-going formation for all the clergy.
