Thursday, 12 March 2009

Guadalajara (Agenzia Fides) – This May, the Archdiocese of Guadalajara (Mexico) and affiliated youth groups will host the 6th “International Race for the Eucharist,” an athletic event for youth and families, which will take place on May 17, 2009, beginning at the city's Cathedral at 8am. The time of arrival at the finish line, at the Martyrs Shrine, is scheduled to be 11am, after a 10,5 k hike. Guadalajara's Martyrs Shrine will receive 10% of the registration fees (120 pesos per person), of the nearly 1,500 expected participants.
In the preceding 5 Races, the youngest runners have always been the first to reach the finish line. The initiative enters into the series of activities planned in collaboration with the 6th World Meeting of Families, which took place in Mexico in January. The event will also be attended by several new groups of runners from Guadalajara and is centered on the celebration of the Mass. The first to set off on the route are the “adults,” followed by the women (10 minutes later), and later “the youth” (15 minutes later).
The requirements for entering the race are: “be athletically fit,” have your admission badge with you, and accept the rules of the event, provided by the International Association of Athletic Federations (IIAF). There are gold, silver, and bronze medals distributed to the first three runners to reach the finish line, and a special prize for religious and missionaries who reach the finish line.
