Tuesday, 24 February 2009

Aparecida (Agenzia Fides) – Tomorrow, February 25 (Ash Wednesday), the Brotherhood Campaign 2009 will be launched at the National Shrine of Aparecida. The theme chosen this year is “Brotherhood and public security,” with the slogan “Peace is the fruit of justice.”
The inauguration of the Campaign will take place at 9am with a Holy Mass presided by Archbishop Raymundo Damasceno Assis of Aparecida and concelebrated by the Secretary General of the National Conference of the Bishops of Brazil (CNBB), Bishop Dimas Lara Barbosa. At the close of the celebration, the Secretary General and Archbishop Damasceno will give a press conference in order to publicly release the Message from the Holy Father Benedict XVI, sent on the occasion of the Brotherhood Campaign.
The general goal of the Brotherhood Campaign 2009 is to spread awareness about public security and thus contribute to a promotion of culture and peace among people, among families, in communities, and in society, so that everyone can join in building up social justice and security for all.
Among the various specific objectives are: make people aware of the violence in their surroundings so they may assume personal responsibility; denounce the seriousness of the crimes against ethics, economy, and management of public affairs; strengthen the educational and evangelizational work in order to build a culture of peace; promote the creation of social networks and public policies in order to overcome violence and its causes; incite solidarity with victims of violence; support actions that help to overcome the causes and effects of insecurity.
The Brotherhood Campaign has been taking place for 60 years now and is an evangelization activity held during Lent. Every year, they chose a different theme, with the goal of creating awareness among the community, educating people in a spirit of brotherhood, and reminding people of their responsibility in the evangelizing action of the Church.
