ASIA/SOUTH KOREA - Teaching the faith to small children: a guide for Catholic preschools

Monday, 19 January 2009

Seoul (Agenzia Fides) – Even at the age of preschool, the seed of the Gospel can be planted in the hearts of children, so that it may spread its roots and bloom in the years to come. This is what a new guide being used by Catholic preschool teachers says. The two-volume guide was composed and edited by the Association of Major Superiors of Feminine Religious Institutes in Korea and is entitled “The Catholic Preschool Curriculum.”
The two-volume work is meant to show the techniques and forms of teaching useful for children ages 5-6 and 6-7. It will be implemented in over 320 Catholic preschools and kindergartens in Korea.
“This guide intends to implement the spirit of Catholic education in the area of preschool education. It will be a great support for the teacher, but also for the children, as they develop their relationship with God and a healthy relationship with others, to plant the seeds of spirituality and the Gospel in their hearts,” said Sister Rosa Ha In-ja, Sister of Saint Paul of Chartres and coordinator of the publication.
The guide, written by religious sisters and lay women specialized in teaching small children, has been praised by the local Catholic community and is fully supported by the Education Commission of the Korean Bishops' Conference, which sponsored it and has applauded it in its creation and implementation.
