Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) – For the first time, the flame that the Scouts send from Bethlehem to Europe and the United States will reach Mexico, as well. The flame reached the “Templo Expiatorio Cristo” (Old Basilica of Guadalupe), to remain lit all of Christmas time, until February 2.
The flame of the Scouts from Austria, is a tradition that is carried out every year, at this time of the year, beginning at the very site where Christ was born, becoming a network that includes various countries of Europe, the United States, and now, Mexico. The tradition began in 1990, when Austrian Scout leaders began this initiative as a means to make “the light of hope” reach every home. The act began to take place across Europe. North American Scouts also traveled this year to take the Bethlehem flame (or “Peace Light”) from Austria to New York. In Chicago, the Mexicans were presented with the Light of Bethlehem, to take it to Mexico. After crossing the border, they went to Nuevo Laredo, Monterrey, San Luis, and Queretaro, and on December 17 they reached Mexico City. As it visits various cities, the flame reaches many communities and on December 24, all the homes can have this light.
The Rector of the “Templo Expiatorio Cristo,” Msgr. Pedro Agustin Rivera, first gave the light to the media, telling them to make sure that it reached their homes and offices. In addition, he asked them to transmit this message through their news sources. Lastly, he said that the flame will remain lit until February 2, feast of the Presentation. During this time, the families can visit and later take the light to their homes. (RG) (Agenzia Fides 22/12/2008)
