ASIA/SOUTH KOREA - Laity Meeting: leading role in the local Church committed to promoting family values and evangelising society

Monday, 22 March 2004

Seoul (Fides Service) - Korea’s lay Catholics are exemplary for their vivacity, dynamism, maturity and ability to evangelise. The Church in Korea is solidly based on active participation of lay people who make an important contribution to pastoral service. This emerged from the 37th Meeting of the Council for Lay Apostolate held in mid March in Seoul.
Representatives of lay associations, movements and individual lay persons from all over the country, following instructions of the Bishops’ Conference, affirmed their commitment to promote and support the family and pastoral care for the family. The Church in Korea is presently preparing to host the 8th FABC Meeting (Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences) 17 to 22 August in Taejeon on the theme “The Family and the Culture of Life”.
Stressing the need to involve the whole Church in Korea to address the crisis of the family, the Lay Meeting offered suggestions to overcome the crisis: promote daily family prayer, reading and sharing of the Word of God; build collaboration with associations of apostolate for the sanctification of the family.
Moreover, in view of parliamentary elections on 15 April, the Lay Council encouraged people to vote for candidates who promise to promote and support family unity. The Lay Apostolate also outlined plans for the active evangelisation of Korean society.
