Vatican City (Fides Service) - “This Marian prayer vigil is of great symbolic importance. It is in fact you dear university students who have an important role to play in building a united Europe, firmly rooted in the spiritual traditions and values by which it was shaped. In this regard the university is one of those typical environments where during the centuries the culture which experienced a marked Christian influence was formed. This rich patrimony of ideals must not be lost.” This was the task which Pope John Paul entrusted to European university students on Saturday 13 March during a Prayer Vigil in the Paul VI Hall in the Vatican, the highlight of the 2nd European Day for University Students. The initiative was promoted by the Council of European Bishops’ Conferences in collaboration with the European Committee of University Chaplains and the Office for University Pastoral of the Vicariate of Rome on the theme: "Christ the hope of Europe".
After leading the recitation of the Rosary in front of a picture of Our Lady Seat of Wisdom the Pope addressed university students in the Hall and those connected via live link in the capitals of the European countries about to join the: Tallinn, Vilnius, Riga, Warsaw, Prague, Bratislava, Budapest, Lubiana, La Valletta e Nicosia. The Pope entrusted all the students, their studies and the cultural and spiritual formation to Our Lady seat of Wisdom and he greeted the students in different languages. (S.L.)
