ASIA/TAIWAN - Jesuits celebrate 50 years of evangelization and cultural promotion through the mass media

Tai Pei (Agenzia Fides) – The great “machine” of the mass media operated by the Jesuits – the Kuangchi Program Service and Guanachi Cultural Group, the producer and publishing house – is celebrating 50 years of evangelization. In half a century, the publishing house has made a noteworthy contribution to social, cultural, and religious education, following the principles of truth, goodness, and beauty. It has also been very appreciated by the society and common folk, becoming a reference point in mass media and for other publications, as well as serving as a useful instrument in evangelization. In the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the evangelization of Taiwan, the Executive Committee of the Voice of the Catholic Church Association of Taiwan, the entity in charge of Social Communications for the Regional Bishops' Conference of Taiwan, has in fact asked the Kuangchi Program Service and Guanachi Cultural Group to produce a series of multi-media products (e.g. DVDs, CDs...) for evangelization.
In 1958, Taiwan was still not up-to-date with television technology, not to mention Catholic TV, however American Jesuit Fr. Phillip Bourret had already seen the great prospects mass media held in terms of progress for society and the Catholic Church in particular. Thus, he founded the Kuangchi Recording Studio, for producing radio and television programs. Today, it is the Kuangchi Program Service. In 1961, the Kuangchi Cultural Audiovisual Program Service is registered as a non-profit organization. (NZ) (Agenzia Fides 24/11/2008)
