Guwahati (Agenzia Fides) – A silent and non-violent protest to call for peace and social harmony, where civil coexistence reigns, along with respect for others, and peace...this is what Catholic students have organized in Guwahati, in Assam (Northeast India), suffering internal conflict and recent attacks that have spread fear among the people.
Catholic students from schools of all kinds have filled the city streets, supported by priests and religious who have encouraged them in their appeal for peace. Archbishop Thomas Menamparampil, of the same city, has also encouraged them to continue in their efforts: “We sincerely pray for peace: peace in our hearts, our cities, our states, between religions. May the Lord unite us and make us active builders of peace.”
The Regional Superior of the Jesuits, Fr. Charles de Souza, has issued a message saying: “Let us promise to never favor violence in our lives, in our acts, in our thoughts. Let us respect life, respect and love our neighbor, forgiving those who hurt us.”
The students a non-violent demonstration in the city, following a panic that broke out from the October 30 bombings that showed disrespect for human life and violence against innocent persons. Thousands of people have joined the demonstration in spirit, lighting a candle in their own home or business, showing their own desire for peace, respect for human life, and the refusal of all violence.
In a statement, the Catholic students said: “Let us condemn the senseless violence that spreads fear. Our hearts are with the victims. We share in the tears of our brothers and sisters, and our suffering knows no limit. As youth, we are the future of society: we do not want violence and we are against terrorism. We ask all people to walk on the path of non-violence. We want to look upon the future with confidence. We believe in the value of life. Every life is precious and should not be destroyed. No one has the right to take a life. We want to build a civilization of love, peace, and harmony.” (PA) (Agenzia Fides 19/11/2008)
