Lima (Agenzia Fides) – In 1983, a group of young Catholics in Peru decided to unite song and musical talent with the love of God and an ardent desire to collaborate in the New Evangelization called for by Pope John Paul II, and began “Takillakkta.” Takillakkta, which in Quechua means “song of the People” or “the People that sings,” is an initiative that came forth from the spiritual family “Sodalite.” Today, Takillakkta celebrates 25 years of using music to express the faith that is inscribed in the origins of the “mestiza” identity of Peru, as it is in the culture of all Latin America.
Takillakkta has performed various concerts all over the globe in the past 25 years, with a mission of evangelizing and promoting national and international solidarity. Their performances have included playing for the Holy Father in the Youth Jubilee in the Holy Year of the Redemption. In 1998, they were in Rome for the Jubilee Gathering of the Apostolic Movements, performing in Saint Peter’s Square. In 2001, they were on tour in France, performing in 12 cities. In 2002, they took their music to Toronto, Canada for World Youth Day. In 2004, they went on tour through Spain, Switzerland, Portugal, and Ecuador, performing in 10 cities, and in 2005, they participated in the World Youth Day held in Cologne, Germany. They have also performed in various Peruvian locations, and in other countries in the area, at international Catholic events.
Many consider the group to be one of the best Catholic music groups in the Spanish-speaking world.
In honor of their 25 anniversary, on October 11, they will give a concert entitled: “Takillakkta: 25 years at the service of the New Evangelization,” in the auditorium of Saint Ursula School in Lima, with an anthology of highlights from their seven musical productions.
