ASIA/JAPAN - National Director of the Pontifical Missionary Societies appointed

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - Cardinal Ivan Dias Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, on 18 April 2008, appointed Father Anselm Kaoru Kawaguchi, of the clergy of the Archdiocese of Tokyo, National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies in Japan for a five-year term (2008-2013).
The new National Director was born in the Prefecture of Shizuoka (Japan) on April 27, 1957 and was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Tokyo in 2003. He studied Sociology and Theology at Sophia University and at the Catholic Seminary in Tokyo. Following his ordination, he served as Parish Pastor in Ichikawa and Assistant to the General Secretary of the Catholic Tokyo International Center (2003-2004), and later Secretary General of the Center (2004-2007). Since 2007, he has served as Parish Pastor of the Parish in Tsukiji. (SL) (Agenzia Fides 10/9/2008)
