ASIA/INDIA - CARDINAL TELESPHORE TOPPO NEW PRESIDENT OF CATHOLIC BISHOPS' CONFERENCE OF INDIA

Trichur (Fides Service) – Cardinal Telesphore Toppo Archbishop of Ranchi has been elected President of Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, CBCI, whose members belong to the three different Catholic rites in India Latin, Syro-Malabar and Syro-Malankar. The new President was elected on January 12 during the CBCI general assembly taking place 7 to 14 January in Trichur, Kerala.
Accepting his election, Cardinal Toppo thanked the Bishops for their confidence and promised full commitment to serve the Church in India. The assembly also elected as new CBCI vice presidents Archbishop Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy of Trichur of Syro-Malabar Catholics and outgoing CBCI president Archbishop Cyril Mar Baselios of Trivandrum of Syro-Malankar Catholics.
