ASIA/CHINA - After inspecting the earthquake disaster area, Bishop Li Liangui of the Diocese of Xianxian affirms the Church’s efforts and the importance of religion in psychological support

Beijing (Agenzia Fides) - Bishop Joseph Li Liangui of Xianxian, Vice-President of Jinde Charities (the Chinese Catholic charitable organization) recently visited the earthquake area, where he made an inspection, verifying damages and making a visit of solidarity to the priests, religious, and Catholic volunteers of Jinde Charities that, along with Mr. Wolfgang Gerstner and Ms. Christina Grawe of Caritas Germany, who have been working since the moment of the tragedy. They continue working together as they form part of the Catholic Coordination Office of relief support in the area. Though still suffering from effects of influenza, the Bishop gave up his rest for an interview with Faith, the Catholic bulletin of He Bei, in order to describe some of the Church’s labor among the earthquake victims in collaboration with the international Catholic community (e.g Caritas Germany) and the gratitude of the people. The Bishop also mentioned the special importance at this time of religion in the disaster-struck area, especially as a means of providing moral and psychological support. “Our sisters are most appreciated,” Bishop Li commented with great pride.
