ASIA/TAIWAN -Construction of a museum dedicated to Catholicism under study in Taiwan

Friday, 4 April 2008

Tai Pei (Agenzia Fides) - Catholic Life Weekly, the weekly bulletin of the Archdiocese of Tai Pei, reports that local Catholics have felt inspired to construct a museum dedicated to Catholicism in Taiwan. According to the Archdiocesan bulletin, the main reason is in order to offer Catholics around the world a place where they can see the history of the Church in Taiwan, especially on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the evangelization of the island. There are currently representatives of the Catholic Church studying the project proposal, together with local authorities and other interested parties.
Through the museum, the great archive of photographs and documents from the diocese, parishes, schools, organizations, ecclesial movements, churches, and buildings of Taiwan could all be gathered into a sort of organized display, in an artistic manner. Sacred music and art would also be more carefully preserved. All this would enable the museum’s staff to respond, as well, to the many mass media groups in search of photos, documents, and materials from the Taiwan Catholic community and who are unsure of how they can obtain access to these articles. With the new museum, there would be a sure point of reference, both for using the material, as well as for obtaining the proper authorizations to do so.
