ASIA/TAIWAN - New National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies appointed

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - Cardinal Ivan Dias Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples, on January 4, 2008, appointed Rev. Felice Chech, M.I. National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies in Taiwan for a five year term (2008-2013).
The new National Director was born on November 11, 1943 in SS. Angeli-Arcade, Treviso (Italy). Following elementary school education, he entered the Seminary. He studied for a licentiate in philosophy and theology in Verona, and completed his studies in Boston (USA). He was ordained a priest in 1970, and the following year, he asked to be sent as a missionary to Taiwan. After studying Chinese in Shinchu (Taiwan), he ministered as follows: Pastor in Hansi, among the natives of the A.-Tayal tribe and Chaplain in the Lotung hospital (1973-77); Pastor in Lotung and spiritual assistant of the School of Nursing at St. Mary’s Hospital and founder of a day care center for 200 children (1977-1986); Vice-Director of the Saint Camillo Hospital in Makung and in the Fisherman Islands, as well as pastor in the same city (1987-1992); Vice-Director of the hospital of St. Mary in Lotung, Head of Programming and Health Assistance for the native peoples and those in rural areas (1992); Head of the School of Nursing at St. Mary’s Hospital (2003) In 2004, he received national recognition for his work in health care, especially for his work among the natives of A.-Tayal.
