Monday, 3 March 2008

Lima (Agenzia Fides) - On Wednesday, February 27, there was a meeting held in the Seminary of Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo with over 150 priests, among them were Vicar Generals, parish pastors, and chaplains of the Archdiocese of Lima, in which they received the guidelines for the Great Mission of Lima, an initiative begun by Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani Thorne, Archbishop of Lima, in response to the Bishops’ request in Aparecida for a continental mission and a new evangelization in Latin America (see Fides 18/1/2008)
The date set for the launching of the Great Mission of Lima, will be Monday, April 28, 2008, with a Eucharistic Celebration in the Basilica Cathedral of Lima at 7pm. The day beforehand, in all the parishes of the Archdiocese, it will be announced. It is scheduled to take place until 2010.
During the meeting, the Archbishop of Lima explained some of the goals of the Great Mission of Lima, to the priests of the Archdiocese. Among the most important were: a more active participation in Sunday mass, the encounter with Christ through Eucharistic Adoration, the reception of the sacraments of initiation, the recitation of the Rosary in families, and volunteer work. One of the main activities that will take place during the Great Mission of Lima, will be door-to-door visits from Mission team members to the families of the Archdiocese. These visits will be made by the laity, who will receive a preparatory formation in Catholic faith and doctrine prior to their visiting of the homes in Lima. These door-to-door visits are set to begin in August 2008.
Next year, the Great Mission of Lima will be in its second phase, where there is scheduled to be a series of youth encounters, cultural activities, health care-related activities, and activities relating to the working world. There will also be a Family Symposium in Lima, on the Social Doctrine of the Church, as well as a Catechesis Tournament for children. Finally, in its third and final phase in 2009, the Archdiocese of Lima will organize a Eucharistic and Marian Congress, with preparatory Eucharistic and Marian Days.
During the meeting, Fr. Jaime Calvo, head of the Pastoral Care Office for the Archdiocese of Lima, will make a presentation on Mission team members, missionary formation workshops, and how the door-to-door campaign will be carried out. (RG) (Agenzia Fides 3/3/2008; righe 31, parole 386)
