Sydney (Agenzia Fides) - In recognition of her person and service, appreciated by the Australian civil community, is the esteem of the entire nation for the Catholic Church: Sr Patricia Rhatigan, who dedicated 50 years to serving the rural poor in remote areas of Australia, has received the Official Order of Australia. Her work to assist the socio-economic development of Aboriginal communities and school instruction in the region of Kimberley (west Australia) has become a point of reference for the local communities and government institutions in the region.
Sr Rhatigan is a member of the Sisters of St John of God, one of the most appreciated congregations in Australia, with its religious and lay branches.
The same award has been given to Barry James Buckley, a member of the Christian Brothers in Queensland, for his service in education, as head master of Nudgee International College since 1995, which offers English Language courses for young foreigners. Another Catholic on the list of public awards published by the Australian government is Sr Helen Margaret Ryan, for her outstanding contribution in the field of music and choral activity for children.
The Catholic Church in Australia has always offered service in hospitals, homes, centres for rehabilitation, immediately following World War II. This work has always earned the appreciation of Australia's civil authorities. The national Catholic community is also remarkably committed to promoting social, economic and cultural development among the Aboriginal minority. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 29/1/2007 righe 25 parole 253)
