ASIA/HOLY LAND - Caritas Jerusalem: calls for an end to humanitarian crisis in Gaza and assistance for Palestinian children

Tuesday, 22 January 2008

Jerusalem (Agenzia Fides) - Caritas Jerusalem has called for the block of persons and goods which is causing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza to be lifted. It joined major international humanitarian organisations in warning of a serious human and social situation in the Palestinian coastal region.
In Gaza food is scarce, the health system is in emergency for lack of medicines. Water, electricity, fuel are rationed and services could stop in a few days with serious consequences for the people. NGOs are not allowed to enter Gaza and this adds to the suffering of the people in a state of extreme poverty. Caritas says crossings to Gaza must be opened so life can return to normal and the people can receive assistance.
Caritas Jerusalem provides concrete assistance to those in difficulty. To help the children Caritas organised two days of fun and amusement to help them smile again. In recent weeks 900 children from the West Bank from villages of Aboud (700) and Taybeh (200) and from villages of Deir Abu Mishal, Rantis and Shukba enjoyed games and musical and theatre spectacles in an experience of sharing in a spirit of peace and joy. The children took part in traditional Palestinian dancing and with the help of teachers performed acrobatics and everyone was amused. The days closed with a little gift for each child.
Caritas Jerusalem had the support of Caritas Spain, a medical team and a few parents of former pupils who helped with practical organisation. One Caritas worker said: “It is wonderful to see these children from rural villages taking part in this initiative. They have few opportunites for fun and celebration. It is good to offer them a moment of happiness”. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 22/1/2008 righe 28 parole 282)
