EUROPE/ITALY -“Travelling with the children of the clouds”: discovering AIFO programmes in Mongolia

Wednesday, 28 November 2007

Rome (Agenzia Fides) - On the occasion of the World Day for Disabled Persons (3 December), the Italian Association Amici di Raoul Follereau (AIFO) is promoting “Travelling with the children of the clouds”, an initiative to inform people about AIFO Community Based Rehabilitation programmes (RBC) in Mongolia. The initiative will take place from the 1-6 December in Imperia. On December 4 there will be a meeting at the Centro Culturale Polivalente at reione Porto Maurizio. At the same time, a real Mongolian “ger” will host an exhibition of photographs taken in Mongolia.
The traditional cone shaped “ger”, or “yurta” tent, is the home of Mongolian nomads. The tent, 6 metres in diameter, is entirely covered with felt. The frame consists of a wooden network and ten poles. The tent, which allows the passage of air and light and is warm in the winter and cool in the summer, is very suitable for the activity and life of these nomad shepherds.
The choice of Mongolia, a country where AIFO has consolidated its activity with Community Based Rehabilitation for Disabled Persons, is connected with official recognition from the Mongolian health ministry for distinguished service in 15 years in the country to assist about 27,000 people with a disability and 700,000 indirect beneficiaries, aimed to improve the living conditions of persons with a disability and their families living in western Mongolia.
