AMERICA/CHILE - Bishops in plenary assembly elect leading members: Bishop Alejandro Goic Karmelic confirmed Bishops' Conference President

Santiago del Chile (Agenzia Fides) - The Catholic Bishops of Chile are holding their 94th plenary assembly at Punta de Tralca, which opened on Monday 19 November with a Mass presided by the Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Aldo Cavalli, who said goodbye since he has been appointed Nuncio to Colombia.
The main theme of the plenary is Pastoral Guidelines 2008-2012 and reflection on the present ecclesial, pastoral and national situation. Yesterday 20 November the Bishops elected leading members: president, vice president two members of the Standing Committee and five bishops of the pastoral commission and other commissions.
Bishop Alejandro Goic Karmelic of the diocese of Rancagua was confirmed as president of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Chile for a second mandate. Other confirmations included vice president Bishop Gonzalo Duarte García de Cortázar of the diocese of Valparaíso, and two members of the Standing Committee: Cardinal Francisco Javier Errázuriz Archbishop of Santiago Ossa, and Archbishop Ricardo Ezzati Andrello of Concepcion.
