ASIA/CHINA - Catholic Seminary in inner Mongolia offers first ever religious formation course for lay people

Hu He Hao Te (Agenzia Fides) - The Inner Mongolia regional Catholic seminary has opened its doors to lay men and women. Some 45 lay men and women active in the life of Basic Church Communities in the 5 dioceses of the province registered for its First Religious Formation Course for Lay Catholics which started on 28 October. “These lay students are taking a two month course which will enable them to work more effectively with priests in evangelisation activities” said Seminary rector Rev. Tian. The Seminary will offer the two month course three times a year. Subjects of study include: Sacred Scripture, Catechism, Liturgy, Moral Theology (especially regarding marriage, in view of family and pre-marriage pastoral care. The students also pray together and share a meal.
Various seminaries in China offer courses to lay people to out to good use material resources and seminary teachers to improve the formation of pastoral workers and lay Catholic in general. In recent years many seminary building have been renovated, new technology has been installed and some seminaries have acquired religious text books from abroad and even foreign teachers.
