AFRICA/NIGERIA - “We are called to help spread the Gospel”: national director of the Pontifical Mission Societies says in letter for World Mission Sunday

Friday, 19 October 2007

Abuja (Agenzia Fides)- “World Mission Sunday is an opportunity to reflect on the urgency and importance of the Church's missionary activity, still today, 50 years since the Fide Donum Encyclical” Mgr Hypolite Adigwe, national Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies Nigeria, writes in a letter for World Mission Sunday on 21 October.
In the Letter, a copy of which was sent to Fides, he mentions Nigeria's 1st Catholic National Mission Congress held in September (see Fides 4 and 5 ottobre 2007), dedicated to the 50th anniversary of Pope Pius XII Fidei Donum Encyclica. “The Encyclical, Fidei Donum, mentioned above asked a very pertinent question - whether our prayers come from a sincere heart, if we pray for the success of the mission without accompanying our prayers with charitable offerings. The World Mission Sunday is a day set apart for this special offering. Pope John Paul II reminded us in this connection that no one is so poor that he has nothing to give” writes Mgr Hypolite.
“Let us join the universal Church in contributing to this fund of which we are one of the greatest beneficiaries. This requires the spirit of generosity, especially from Priests in difficult areas who may find it difficult to get ends meet if they do not make other collections for that Sunday. But it is a sacrifice that we have been called upon to make, and one that we can make, for the spread of the Gospel” the Letter of the national director of the Pontifical Mission Societies in Nigeria concludes.
