OCEANIA/AUSTRALIA - Pontifical Mission Societies in Australia prepare for Mission Sunday: reflection focuses on young people

Thursday, 18 October 2007

Sydney (Agenzia Fides) - How can young people play a leading role in missionary work; what are their specific qualities and principal modalities; in what sector must they be oriented to harness all their mission potential: this reflection on the role and charisma young people and mission will guide the celebration of World Mission Sunday in Australia, with the help of material distributed by the national office for the Pontifical Mission Societies.
Dioceses and parishes will reflect on Pope Benedict XVI's Message for Mission Sunday 2007, in which the Holy Father calls bishops, priests, religious and lay people to reflect on the importance of the Church's missionary activity today. On the basis of guidelines given by the Pope, Catholics in Australia will give special attention to the role of young people, keeping in mind that in 2008 Australia will host World Youth Day which will gather together thousands of young people from all over the world. WYD is seen and an opportunity for evangelisation and hence the need for a supplement of reflection to understand better the relationship between young people and mission.
The Mission Sunday collection organised all over the country by the local Pontifical Mission Societies offices will go to help people in 160 different countries, offering assistance for spiritual growth, education, basic services.
