AMERICA/MEXICO - In an ethical key Bishops contribute to discussion on fiscal reform and present situation of poverty, insecurity and political polarisation

Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) - The Mexican Bishops' Commission for Social Pastoral Care issued a statement with which it offers all Mexican men and women of good will in an ethical key a contribution to the public debate on fiscal reform proposed by the federal government and the present situation in the country. In this scenario, the Bishops assume with responsibility their mission as Shepherds taking into account that “although Christians are not of this world they are in the world and although this is not their permanent home, this is their earthy homeland ”.
The Bishops say the country has made some progress but "there persists a serious and iniquitous economic and social situation due, among other things, to concentration of enormous wealth in the hands of a few... which is the cause of growing poverty all over the country, and to the public insecurity and political polarisation which characterise the situation in Mexico". The Bishops consider fiscal reform necessary but "as part of a series of basic reforms still pending and no less urgent", such as reforms with regard to education, elections, justice and general state reforms.
The statement offers criteria for judgement, presenting the characteristics of a "good' fiscal system. The Bishops consider the system to be adopted "should promote sustainable, fair, inclusive development and should guarantee all citizens full human, political, social and cultural rights". Also indispensable “recognition of the gravity of the social and economic conditions of the great majority of the population as a condition for responsible dialogue” and “ample information and transparency on the economic and social challenges facing the country to promote the responsible involvement of every citizen”.
The Bishops conclude expressing hope with regard to the national situation which, they say to many might appear discouraging, but which, they are convinced, can be transformed into a motive for national growth. They pray God will prepare hearts and wills to seek that which unites rather than what divides in order to find solutions to the present difficulties.
