AFRICA/BURUNDI - Ordination of new Catholic Bishop of Bururi: among those present Burundi's principal authorities

Bujumbura (Agenzia Fides)- A joyful crowd welcomed the new Bishop of Bururi, in Burundi. Bishop Venant Bacinoni who was ordained on Saturday 8 September in Kabuye sports stadium.
Civic authorities present for the occasion included Burundian president Pierre Nkurunziza, vice president Martin Nduwimana, former heads of state Jean-Baptiste Bagaza, Pierre Buyoya, Sylvestre Ntibantunganya and Domitien Ndayizeye.
Archbishop Simon Ntamwana of Gitega greeted the Burundian authorities and delegations from Tanzania, Rwanda and Democratic Congo. Archbishop Evariste Ngoyagoye of Bujumbura, who presided the Ordination Mass, recalled that the principal duty of a bishop is to teach the Gospel, the Good News of Jesus Christ and he said he was sure the faithful of Bururi diocese would welcome their new Bishop with love and joy.
The president of Burundi Mr Nkurunziza, thanked God for giving the people of Bururi a new Shepherd and he asked Bishop Bacinoni to work to promote peace in Burundi.
Bishop Venant Bacinoni, was born on 20 February 1940 at Kirisi, diocese of Bururi. He was ordained a priest on 20 April 1965. He was appointed Bishop of Bururi by Pope Benedict XVI on 25 June 2007 (see Fides 25 June 2007).
The diocese of Bururi has an area of 6.500sq km, and a population of 966,390 including 413,960 Catholics gathered in 20 parishes served by 76 priests. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 10/9/2007 righe 24 parole 263)
