AMERICA/MEXICO - Catholic Hospital of Our Lady of Salvation marks 60 years of healthcare

Tuesday, 24 July 2007

Morelia (Agenzia Fides) - This year the Catholic Hospital of Nuestra Señora de la Salud in Morella, the main city in the central Mexican state Michoacan is marking its 60th anniversary
The hospital was an initiative of the three local parish priests 60 years ago who saw the need to offer medical care to poor people. With the support of the local Archbishop Luis M. Altamirano the Hospital of Nuestra Señora de la Salud was built with its own Nursing School which has since trained numerous young men and women nurses.
At first the hospital and nursing school were run by the Daughters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul. Fifteen years ago those Sisters were replaced by Catholic Missionary Social Workers.
Caring for the sick is typical of the Christian faith and the Catholic healthcare assistance has always sought to show people that they are loved by God. A patient is not just a case, but a human person to be treated with respect. The staff at the hospital offer professional care as well as respect and loving care for all the needs, bodily and spiritual of the patient. Advances in medicine demand continual technical and moral formation. The staff care for the patients as an act of love for Christ.
From the beginning lay Catholics have been involved in the activity of the hospital by means of a Patrons Association. Doctors are expected to be competent but also to have a mystics of service and to perform their professional activity with ethical conviction. (AP) (24/7/2007 Agenzia Fides; Righe:28; Parole:329)
