Tuesday, 10 July 2007

Khartoum (Agenzia Fides) - At least fifteen people died, 72 were injured and several thousand were left homeless in floods caused by torrential rains in Sudan.
At a media conference Sudan's Interior Minister Al Zubair Bachir Taha, warned that the rain is expected to continue in many provinces of Sudan and that people should be on the alert. These are the heaviest rainfalls recorded in the country in 60 years.
The Minister said “This is not yet the rain season. That will start on 13 July”.
Following floods in Kasala and another 8 provinces in northern Sudan where the waters of the River Nile reach record levels, 5,000 families had to be evacuated.
Heavy rains are also falling in Ethiopia, principal supplier of water to the Nile. The White Nile and the Blue Nile flow into each other in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, forming one river which has its mouth on the Mediterranean coast of Egypt.
