ASIA/SOUTH KOREA - Catholic Bishops Message for Environment Day 2007

Seoul (Agenzia Fides) - Safeguard and respect Creation a gift of God: in this spirit the Korean Bishops' Commission of Justice and Peace issued a message for national Environment Day 2007 June 5.
The Message invites all Christians and all Koreans of good will to give more attention to the question of environment protection. In the message “An Ecology of Peace and Preventing Global Warming”, the president of the commission Bishop Boniface Choi Ki-san, says everyone must be more aware of his or her responsibility: “Global warming is a product of materialism. Excessive emission of carbon dioxide not only destroys the environment it leads to climate change. If we overlook this phenomenon the natural environment in which human beings live will be destroyed ”.
The Bishop urges the faithful “to adopt a new style of life” not to be dragged along with the culture of consumerism and materialism. He calls on political leaders to launch initiatives to promote public awareness and industrial progress which respects the environment, creation, the ecosystem and the right to life il”.
