ASIA/KOREA - The Pope appoints auxiliary Bishop of Daegu

Vatican City (Fides Service) - The Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, on 23 March 2007 appointed Rev. Thaddeus Cho Hwan-Kil, until now editor of the Maeil Catholic newspaper, auxiliary Bishop of the archdiocese of Daegu (Korea), assigning to him the titular see of Abbir maggiore.
Bishop elect Thaddeus Cho Hwan-Kil was born on 7 November 1954 at Hwa-Won in the archdiocese of Daegu. He studied philosophy and theology at Kwangju Major Seminary (1972-1981) and was ordained a priest on 19 March 1981. Since then he has ministered as follows: assistant priest at Daedok parish (1981-1982); assistant priest at Bokja parish (1982-1983); army chaplain (1983-1988); parish priest at Doksu parish (1988-1991); sabbatical year and pastoral care of Korean Catholics in the diocese of Charlotte (USA) (1991-1993); two month’s Scripture course on the New Testament at Ecce Homo College, Jerusalem (1993); parish priest at Hyeonggok parish (1994-1998); director of the diocesan pastoral centre (1998-2002); diocesan chancellor and director of Kwandeokjong Shrine (1999-2004).
